What’s the deal with #bouldering it seems like it’ all pictures and videos of people climbing in the gym. It’s totally fine to climb in the gym, I do all the time, also to my shame I spray about it on Instagram. It’s not bouldering, it’s not even rock climbing. Literally it’s plastic climbing. It’s the most contrived and expensive climbing that I do and I’m a boulderer. I know that it sounds like I’m talking shit, well I guess I am. I just want to point out a something we all do that is so silly. And when I started to follow #bouldering I was expecting that it would be a collection of beautiful pictures that would inspire me to get out to a place that I have never been before. To inspire me to go have another adventure, not another video of some dude climbing on volumes under a strobe light. Let me reiterate I am not opposed to people posting pictures of themselves climbing in the gym even a bouldering gym. I am just pointing out that I think that we should describe what we are doing more accurately. Also, climbing is more than just a fitness activity, it is a lifestyle sport, and it is an outdoor pursuit that can change the lives of the participants. It has taught me how to get out of my comfort zone so I can stretch and grow as a human being. It has given me and will give others a love and respect for wild places and a desire to protect them. And it can help foster personal relationships. It is the greatest thing that I have found in my life, and it started in a gym. I guess what I am trying to say is get outside, some where you love or even better somewhere new, make yourself uncomfortable and fall in love with the great outdoors.
